WATER RETENTION. A phrase I use A LOT, and hear A LOT. But does any one really know what the hell it means? Girls, on any given ‘fat day’ will usually be heard using the phrase “I’m feeling so heavy today, I think it must be water retention’ and in turn your friends will respond to any feelings of self-loathing with “oh babe, don’t worry about what the scales say, it’s just water retention”. So I decided I needed to find out just exactly what is this thing that we speak of so frequently which is apparently the cause of all that bloating, puffy face, and swollen ankles/hands/thighs!
Well, quite simply: when our bodies are dehydrated and we haven’t drunk enough water, we hold on to ALL the water that we consume indirectly through our food and drink. This means that instead of being flushed out, the cells hold onto the water making them bigger, resulting in that swollen feeling we are all so aware of.
The cure? The only way to STOP our water holding water – is to drink as much of it as we can. When we are fully hydrated our body doesn’t feel it needs it so it flushes it out, and stops holding onto it. The recommended amount varies from 2 to 4 litres a day, so I put it to the test.
For 5 days I drunk 4 litres of water a day and lost 2kg (literally a miracle) and noticed a huge difference to my face and my thigh/hip area. I bought a 75cl bottle of Evian and re-filled it with tap water every time it ran out and drank continuously throughout the day. If your not used to drinking lots of water it can feel like a lot to stomach, but sip gradually throughout the day rather than downing a glass at one time – it’s much better for you! After a couple of days you will get so used to drinking water that it will seem strange that you ever went an hour without it.
Simpler than dieting, right? I challenge you all to do the same and see just how much better you feel, not only lighter but with glowing skin and white eyes. The best part? IT’s FREE! The one downside? Frequent trips to the toilet.
